Past Project: Let's Imagine Yoga Camp with BCF - Module 1
On June 16th and 17th 2018, Let's Imagine hosted our first yoga camp with Bali Children Foundation. Let's Imagine Yoga Camp was led by Kimberly, Founder of Let's Imagine, who was joined by three Volunteer Yoga Teachers, Lorena, Maggy and Jill.
This Let's Imagine Yoga Camp was the first of six modules that will be taught every 60 days with youth from Bali Children Foundation for two age groups, 8-12 yrs. and 13-18 yrs. Co-Directors of Let's Imagine, Kimberly and Shannon, designed the curriculum for Let's Imagine Yoga Camp .
Module 1 for the younger group focused on the theme of Nature. Students learned asanas (physical postures) inspired by nature such as Mountain Pose, Tree Pose, Bird Pose, Frog Pose, Turtle Pose, Bunny Pose, and a handful of other animal asanas. Students also learned a variety of nature inspired pranayama (breathing techniques) such as Lion's Breath, Bumblebee Breath, Ocean Breath and Snake Breath. In addition to asana and pranayama, we played games with the children and practiced partner yoga and guided relaxation. The students responded very well to the Nature theme and we are excited to follow up with Module 2.
Module 1 for the older group focused on the theme of Yamas, Niyamas & Asanas, or the first three limbs of Pantanjali's eightfold path of yoga. Our goal with this group is to share the 8 limbs of yoga over the course of the year, with the aim to inspire them to go on and become yoga teachers if they would like to teach in their local communities! We started with a discussion about the 5 Yamas and 5 Niyamas and our students were both attentive and very receptive to the information that we shared. On the second day, they came back with all 10 Yamas and Niyamas memorized - we were so impressed! In addition to teaching the Yamas and Niyamas, we introduced Asana (physical postures) with Surya Namaskar (sun salutations), vinyasa flow, partner yoga, and guided relaxation + visualization. The students also responded very well to all of the aspects of yoga that we instructed and some of them even asked if we could do yoga every week!
Let's Imagine would like to thank Margaret, the founder of Bali Children Foundation, for allowing us to organize Let's Imagine Yoga Camp. We would also like to thank Wayan, Bali Children Foundation Project Manager, who was a huge help organizing the students and the location for our camp. She also helped by transporting the Volunteer Yoga Teachers to and from camp. We couldn't have done it without her! Let's Imagine would like to extend a warm thank you to the BCF staff who volunteered their time to translate for the students. Thank you to our Volunteer Yoga Teachers, Jill, Maggie and Lorena for dedicating their time to help plan and teach Let's Imagine Yoga Camp. Last but certainly not least, thank you to all of the BCF students who came to practice with us!
When we asked one of our Volunteer Yoga Teachers, Lorena, what was her favorite part of Let's Imagine Yoga Camp, she replied, "Connecting with the children." We couldn't agree more -sharing yoga with youth from Bali Children Foundation is a very special project that we truly look forward to continue organizing.
